WHAT IS BUFFALO WOMEN?

BUFFALO WOMEN is a new musical by playwright Beaufield Berry and composer J. Isaiah Smith. 

BUFFALO WOMEN follows the violent and merciful journey of Black women of the "Wild West" in post-Juneteenth America. Our protagonist Bethula is on the search for her daughter Zuleika after eight years apart. Big Rich the bounty hunter is fresh on her spurs and aiming to make her pay for what she's done to survive. Along the way, Bethula meets Zadie, a young girl on a search of her own as well as Cathay, Mary, and Biddy, real-life women with their own remarkable stories. The Playwright herself guides us on an unstoppable tour of the time, the history, and steps into the shoes of the bad guy himself. 

This show is a love letter to the origins of country music, Black women, motherhood, correcting history, and finding faith in the absence? of God.

BUFFALO WOMEN was conceived during the workshop process of my last show, RED SUMMER. 

It was a chosen recipient for the inaugural NNPN Bridge Cohort Program and had it’s first workshop preview at the BlueBarn Theatrein June of 2021. It was our first time back on a stage following the height of Covid. 

That preview opened the door to be programmed on the BlueBarn season, as well as programmed with The Black Box theater in Kansas City, The Pyramid Theatre Company  and the Des Moines Playhouse in Des Moines, Iowa. The Pyramid Theatre Company  is the ONLY Black theatre company  in the state of Iowa. 

This is the genesis of what we think the show is capable of doing, and how far we believe it can go. To have a new work-in-progress musical programmed in four regional theaters is an amazing feat. 

AND NOW--we have to complete it! This work cannot be completed without an investment from you. 

A MUSICAL WORKSHOP is a 29-hour feat where the creative team (playwright, composer, director, dramaturg) actors, musicians, and invited guests spend the time listening, honing, recrafting the work. We dissect and rebuild and get it as close to stage and audience ready as possible. We comb through lyrics, making sure the story is tight. We answer the questions that have popped up over the prior months of preparation. THIS is where the magic happens, friends. This is what separates the cowgirls from the cowpokes. 

The BUFFALO WOMEN NEW MUSICAL WORKSHOP is specifically seeking funding to create a workshop atmosphere NEW to the Omaha arts community. 

Unaffiliated with any sponsor theater, this workshop will be to serve the show and artists, AT LARGE, for the life of the show itself, not any one performance. Your donation will ultimately branch out to hundreds of artists across the country as BUFFALO WOMEN finds homes in theaters across the country. 

This initial investment in the show will take it from exciting to extraordinary by allowing the artists to truly devote their time, talents, and energy in what BUFFALO WOMEN will and can be for the length of its existence. The show we build in January in Omaha could be the show you see off and on Broadway in the years to come.
